ORYX PC-05: Exclusive Breastmilk during Hospital Stay

What Are We Tracking And Why?

We are striving to become a Baby-Friendly Accredited Hospital. Our staff gets additional training to offer an optimal level of care for family bonding and infant feeding. This is achieved through systematic stages (skin-to-skin after birth, rooming-in during the hospital stay, etc.) as newborns adjust to conditions in their new external environment.

Most of the women who deliver at Walter Reed Bethesda want to breastfeed their babies. We are evaluated on the number of newborns that receive breastmilk exclusively for their entire hospital stay. Our focus is to help mothers achieve their feeding goals for their newborns.

How Are We Doing?

What Are We Doing To Improve?

We support a mother’s feeding choice for her infant.
  • We train all of our healthcare staff in the skills of the Baby-Friendly Initiative.
  • We educate and support mothers and families during pregnancy about what works best for their newborns.
  • We ask our mothers for feedback to improve our efforts.
  • We provide 24/7 lactation support.
