TRICARE Inpatient Satisfaction Survey Ratings (TRISS)

What Are We Tracking And Why?

The TRICARE Inpatient Satisfaction Survey monitors and reports on the experience and satisfaction of patients who have been admitted to military and civilian hospitals. The survey assesses care across all services and venues (i.e., direct care at a military treatment facility and private-sector, or purchased, care), including assessment of inpatient surgical, medical, and maternal care. The information from the survey can be useful for internal quality improvement initiatives, to assess the impact of policy changes, and to provide feedback to healthcare providers and patients.

As part of the survey, there are two questions that encapsulate patients’ perceptions of the care they receive; (1) How would you rate your overall experience?, and (2) Would you recommend this hospital to your friends and family?

At Walter Reed Bethesda, patients are asked to rate their overall experience on a scale of 0 (worst possible hospital experience) to 10 (best possible hospital experience). This information gives us a broad view of how patients perceive their experience with us. We also ask patients to rate us on a 0-10 scale on how likely they are to recommend us to their friends and family.

How Are We Doing?

What Are We Doing To Improve?

Walter Reed Bethesda has been surveying patients about their experiences routinely for many years, and we typically score very high on these summary measures. Our improvement efforts are directed at more specific aspects of patient experiences, which help to enhance our overall rating and our patients’ willingness to recommend the hospital.
