Command Philosophy
We do three things at Walter Reed Bethesda:
  • ACCOMPLISH OUR MISSION
  • TAKE CARE OF EACH OTHER
  • TAKE CARE OF OUR FAMILIES
I cannot separate these--they are one--MISSION/PEOPLE, ”good leaders find ways to do both.”
  • ACCOMPLISH OUR MISSION
SAY YES to those we are privileged to serve. PATIENT-CENTERED access to high quality health care is why we get out of bed in the morning. We will find a way to SAY YES to all we are privileged to serve.
Our mission is very special. Be very proud of who we are, what we do, and most importantly, how we do it. Our mission is a privilege. Our systems/processes will be PATIENT-CENTERED and patient friendly. Every encounter, with every patient, everytime is special-- “do the ordinary with the conviction of its immense importance.”
Those we are privileged to serve must TRUST us; they must know we care—“each individual is unique, precious, and unrepeatable, and must be treated that way.”
Once a day, take a moment and think about this.
  • PATIENT-CENTERED
Safe, efficient, effective systems make it much easier to SAY YES. It is everyone’s job, beginning with me, to create conditions for us to SAY YES.
    • SAY THANK YOU to each other. Acknowledge the great work each of us does everyday.
    • SAYING YES and being PATIENT-CENTERED is founded upon the way we treat
each other--“each of us is unique, precious, and unrepeatable.”
  • SAFETY FIRST AND ALWAYS
Safety is taking care of each other. Patient Safety = good patient care. A culture of trust, transparency, open discussion, and taking advantage of lessons learned is key to PATIENT-CENTERED care.
  • STEWARDSHIP
Resources-time, critical thinking, focus, priorities, money--are limited (not limiting) and precious. We will use our best judgment. We will earn, save, manage, and expend our resources wisely so we can better serve our MISSION/PEOPLE.
  • TAKE CARE OF EACH OTHER AND OUR FAMILIES
Our mission can be challenging/relentless/stressful. Each of us makes an invaluable contribution to who we are, what we do, and how we do it. “Each of us is unique, precious, and unrepeatable . .”
    • SAY THANK YOU to each other. Acknowledge the great work each of us does everyday.
    • We have a duty to ourselves, each other, and our mission to ensure that each of us is comprehensively fit: physically, mentally, and spiritually.
Each of us will prosper: personally, professionally, in our relationships/Family, and spritually. We owe it to ourselves, each other, and those we are privileged to serve to prepare for the next opportunity-- job, increased responsibility, promotion, deployment, etc. We will learn, grow, and prosper individually and collectively. We will take care of each other.
  • INITIATIVE-Think critically. Use your best judgment.
    • Is it the right thing for our MISSION/PEOPLE?
    • Is it consistent with our core values?
    • Is it PATIENT-CENTERED, Safe, Efficient, and Effective?
    • Is it in line with our strategy and priorities?
    • Is it something you are willing to be accountable for?
    • If you answer yes to all five- drive on and let us know how we can help.
Discipline: I firmly believe in our Services’ CORE VALUES. I expect each of us to live up to our CORE VALUES. I expect leaders to model our values and enforce standards--“we more often need to be reminded than we need to be taught.” Leaders will raise the individual to the standard, not lower the standard to the individual.
Unacceptable and will not be tolerated: moral and ethical violations, lack of integrity, discrimination, harassment, sexual assault. Expect me to respond quickly and decisively in these areas.
KEYS TO SUCCESS
  • CORE VALUES/DISCIPLINE
  • ONE TEAM---TAKING CARE OF OURSELVES AND EACH OTHER
  • PATIENT-CENTERED, SAFE, EFFICIENT, EFFECTIVE SYSTEMS
  • STEWARDSHIP
  • CRITICAL THINKING
  • SHARING OUR THOUGHTS/IDEAS--disagreement is not disrespect--LISTENING
I am extremely proud to be our commander!
