Minimally Invasive Laparoscopy Gynecologic Surgery
This is a 2-year academic fellowship that incorporates clinical, research, and teaching responsibilities at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and Holy Cross Hospital. The program is affiliated with the Academic accreditation of the Uniformed Services University. The overall goal of the post-graduate training program is to produce expertly trained gynecologic endoscopists that will provide faculty at each teaching facility United States Army Medical Center (MEDCEN). Our graduates will provide additional skill enhancement for all gynecologic surgeons on staff and provide for resident education and training for future Medical Department Activity (MEDDAC) staff. Fellows will have teaching responsibilities as they relate to the training of residents in the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency program, as well as medical students from the Uniformed Services University.
The fellowship consists of a comprehensive gynecologic endoscopy program in advanced laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, and robotics. The fellow will operate with key faculty in gynecologic oncology, urogynecology, reproductive endocrinology and advanced gynecologic endoscopy. The fellow will receive extensive laparoscopic training under the direct supervision of the program director and participating faculty. At the completion of training the fellow can expect to be proficient in commonly performed advanced laparoscopic cases such as supracervical and total laparoscopic hysterectomy, laparoscopic myomectomy,, laparoscopic colpopexy, presacral neurectomy and similar expertise in robotic surgical procedures for benign disease. The fellow will also be exposed to minimally invasive surgical techniques in urogynecologic procedures such as TVT and pelvic floor reconstructive kits. At Holy Cross the fellow will have the unique opportunity to work with the gyn oncology staff and have the opportunity to assist in laparoscopic staging and radical surgery for gynecologic malignancies.
The Uniformed Services University campus is home to the only DOD state of the art training facility in Robotic surgery. USU is also one of only a few institutions with a state-of-the art ACS accredited clinical simulation center. Surgical laboratories with established gynecologic protocols are readily available both at Walter Reed, Bethesda and at USU. Research opportunities are encouraged and readily available within the department at Walter Reed, Bethesda and the Uniformed Services University. The fellow is required to complete at least one research project by the completion of fellowship to be presented at a national meeting.
