This internship is for those who:

  • Desire a broad based internship experience.
  • Plan an operational assignment including Flight Surgery and Undersea Medicine.
  • Desire future training in Radiology, Emergency Medicine, Ophthalmology, Anesthesiology, and Pathology.
  • Are undecided in their future career path.

Interviews are conducted every year from 1 July-1 October with either the Program Director or one of the Associate Program Directors.  Please email the Program Coordinator to set up the time and location of your interview.  Please also email the Program Coordinator well in advance with your CV and contact number.



The Transitional Year Internship is 12 months long with 13 clinical rotation blocks.  The clinical rotations are as follows:

Required (9): 
2 Internal Medicine Ward (WRNMMC or Distinct of Columbia VAMC)
1 Medical Intensive Care Unit
1 Inpatient Cardiology
1 Pediatric Clinic
1 Ambulatory Medicine (WRNMMC or Kimbrough Ambulatory Care Center)
1 Orthopedics (4 weeks WRNMMC) or 1 Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (2 weeks WRNMMC, 2 weeks Annapolis Sports Medicine)
1 Fairfax Emergency Medicine
1 OB-GYN Outpatient Rotation
Selective (1): 1 Rotation in the area of your interest
Electives (3): 3 Electives from the available pick list
