The National Capital Consortium (Walter Reed) Urology Residency Program
The National Capital Consortium (Walter Reed) Urology Residency program at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center is the largest army urology training program in the military. As one of the oldest Urology residencies in the country (started in 1947) many of the graduates have gone on to become leaders in field of Urology in both the military and university medical centers. At our Walter Reed-Bethesda campus, urology attendings and resident trainees alike are fully engaged in caring for our nation’s wounded warriors as well as their families, active duty personnel and their dependents, retirees, and our nation’s leaders.
The National Capital Consortium (NCC) Walter Reed Urology Residency is a 6-year, fully accredited training program. Residents complete 2 years on the general surgery service with select rotations on Urology and Transplant Surgery followed by 4 years in Urology. Candidates are selected from applicants in good standing from accredited medical or osteopathic schools. The NCC Walter Reed Urology program currently accepts two residents a year.
The Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) Urology Service is the busiest urology service in the military. All attendings urologists are fellowship trained with expertise in: Female and Reconstructive surgery, Pediatric Urology, Oncologic Surgery, Endourology, and Andrology (Male Infertility and Sexual Health). The program has a vibrant teaching environment that includes: daily morning report, preoperative conference, radiology rounds, pathology conference, journal clubs, visiting professors, All-City Pediatric Conferences and tumor board.
The WRNMMC Urology Residency has dedicated research time during which the resident can pursue individual projects at the Center for Prostate Disease Research, National Cancer Institute and the Joint Pathology Center (formerly known as the AFIP (Armed Forces Institute of Pathology)).
The WRNMMC Urology Residency program has close associations with Children's National Medical Center, The National Cancer Institute of the NIH, and Virginia Hospital Center. Residents have the opportunity to rotate at these world class centers. With new facilities that include, renovated operating rooms, two Dual Console DaVinci robots, and an expanded SIM Center, urology residents are exposed the newest technological advances. WRNMMC remains the primary referral center for Operation Enduring Freedom. Also many local military facilities refer to WRNMMC.
The Urology Resident is part of a robust GME experience at WRNMMC with its over 60 fully accredited residency and fellowship programs. The educational and clinical opportunities at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center provide a vast training environment for any Urology Resident.
