National Capital Consortium (NCC)
Orthopaedic Clerkship, Internship and Residency

Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) in Bethesda, Maryland is home to the National Capital Consortium (NCC) GME training program.

The three major military hospitals in the area include WRNMMC, Fort Belvoir Community Hospital and Malcolm Grow Medical Clinics & Surgery Center. Numerous satellite clinics are located throughout the region that provide a system of referral to the major hospitals. The National Capital Area includes nearly 400,000 beneficiaries.

WRNMMC is a 345-bed, tri-service, quaternary-care, Level II Trauma facility, under the umbrella of the Defense Health Agency. The mission of the department is to keep the active duty fit to fight and to care for their dependents. In addition, the department cares for retired service members, Congress, Executive and Judiciary branches of government, and NATO service members and their families. WRNMMC also serves as a primary referral canter for casualties from conflicts throughout the world. This patient population provides an excellent case mix.

In addition to being the largest and preeminent medical center in the DOD, WRNMMC is home to the military’s most comprehensive center for Graduate Medical Education, with 75 medical and allied health programs. At Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, we believe the tradition of any great medical institution is evident in both its service and by the teaching it provides. Our faculty consists of nationally-recognized researchers, editors in major specialty journals, and leaders in specialty practices and societies.

The NCC Orthopaedic Residency program is a fully accredited, comprehensive multi-center, five-year program (with an additional research year). The Program is comprised of 36 residency training spots, with three Army and three Navy residents at each year/level of training, and a dedicated orthopaedic internship.

In addition to time spent within the NCC, residents rotate at various other locations to enhance their broad orthopaedic experience, often without having to leave the greater National Capital Area.
