Transitional Year Internship
Program Overview

The Transitional Year Internship at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) is a fast-paced and exciting clinical learning environment with diverse opportunities for patient care and training. Our goal is to prepare PGY-1 physicians for their next step (whether that is residency or operational medicine) through stimulating curriculum including interesting clinical rotations, relevant didactics, and opportunities for hands-on simulation.

Located just outside Washington, D.C., our patient population includes Active Duty / Reserve Service Members, Retirees, Dependents, as well as civilian government employees (including our Nation’s Leaders).

This internship is for those who:

  • Desire a broad based internship experience.
  • Plan an operational assignment after PGY-1 (including Flight Surgery and Undersea Medicine or other GMO).
  • Desire future training in competitive residency specialties (including Diagnostic Radiology, Emergency Medicine, Ophthalmology, Anesthesiology, and Pathology).
  • Are undecided in their future career path.
  • Army NCC Preselect Pathways: Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Diagnostic Radiology, and Radiation Oncology

13 block rotations are scheduled throughout the academic calendar year. Trainees are evaluated based on ACGME Milestones.

Required Rotations: Electives / Selective:
  • Elective (3): 3 rotations chosen by the trainee
  • Selective (1): 1 rotation chosen by Program Director based on an area of your interest

Research is a Program Requirement (which will also help with subsequent GMESB applications for residency / fellowship and for building your CV). This requirement is typically satisfied through participation in the annual National Capital Region Research Symposium.

HPSP students will also complete a 1 week Combat Casualty Care Course (C4) training in San Antonio, TX during the year.
